I’m a Senior; I’m Retired; Now What?
On Saturday Sep. 19 Bishop Taylor will lead a workshop “Taylor-made” for Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd Healing Ministry has asked him to speak to concerns you expressed during Advent of last year. Porter is a popular speaker and facilitator and the time together will be memorable. The workshop is roughly titled "Spiritual Discernment in the Golden Years," and it addresses questions such as “How do I continue to find joy and purpose in my latter years?” or in other words, “Why am I still here?”
G. Porter Taylor, served as the sixth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina from Sept. 18, 2004 - October 1, 2016. He grew up in Asheville North Carolina, earning his B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his M.A. in English from the University of South Carolina, and his Ph.D. in theology and literature from Emory University. He received his M.Div. from The School of Theology at Sewanee and served at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Franklin, Tennessee. For the past three years he has taught at Wake Forest University Divinity School as a Visiting Professor for Episcopal Studies.
Porter is the author of To Dream as God Dreams: Sermons of Hope, Conversion, and Community, From Anger to Zion: An Alphabet of Faith, and his new memoir: Are You Persuaded? In and Out of Being A Bishop. He is married to Jo Taylor, an artist and research nurse. They have two children, Arthur & Marie.
There is no charge or registration. Coffee and a continental breakfast is available at 8:30am, and the workshop begins at 9am. A simple lunch is at 11:30am, followed by a chance to ask challenging questions about aging. The workshop should adjourn around 1pm.
This workshop is not open to the public, but we have invited our friends from Messiah Episcopal Church in Murphy, and personal friends are certainly welcome. For questions or more information, please see Fr. Bill Breedlove, Elizabeth Rybicki, or Suzi Herbert.
