Annual Pancake Supper at Good Shepherd

It’s time again to gather up family and friends for the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, Tuesday, February 25, 5-7 p.m., at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Hayesville. As always, the menu features melt-in-your-mouth, from-scratch pancakes made with fresh eggs, buttermilk, butter, and special flour. Along with the pancakes are local Bitter Creek extra lean handmade sausages, warm maple syrup, apple sauce, orange juice, coffee and tea. Gluten free pancakes on request. The price is $6.00 for ages 12 and older, $3.00 for 11 and younger.

Since its inception, Good Shepherd has observed this ancient tradition of eating pancakes on the day before Ash Wednesday in order to clear the larder of milk, fat, and meat before fasting begins. For the past 20 years the proceeds have gone to benefit children and youth ministries of Sunday School, Order of St. George, Brotherhood of the Fire and other outreach ministries to young people in the community.

The event is sponsored by the young people who attend the Order of Saint George weekly prayer breakfasts. Many of the youths who served over the past 20 years now have children of their own serving tables. According to Turner Guidry, “The youth love doing this ... they get such positive praise from the ‘customers’ at their designated tables and they feel like stakeholders in our ministries. We have Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, and of course, Episcopal youths helping.”

Like a well-oiled machine, the kitchen and able servers cheerfully distribute as many as 600 pancakes to loyal clientele from many churches who regularly show up for the supper. You can be among them! To get to Good Shepherd, drive about one mile east of Walgreens Drugs on Hwy 64 to 495 Herbert Hills Drive. For details about the many programs available at the church, see the website: www.goodshepherdhayesville.org

By the way, the word Shrove comes from the word Shrive which means to be forgiven of our sins through confession, a part of one’s preparation for Easter. Good Shepherd offers Holy Eucharist at noon on Ash Wednesday February 26th with the penitential Imposition of Ashes. All are welcome.

Christmas at Good Shepherd

Christmas Season at Good Shepherd

On Saturday December 21 at 6:30 p.m. the Good Shepherd Episcopal Chancel Choir presents “Jesus! The Advent of the Messiah,” a cantata composed by Mary McDonald and Rose Aspinall, under the direction of Keith Christensen. You are invited to bring a can of food for the Clay and Towns Counties Food Pantry as your donation. Cookies and hot beverages will be shared at intermission followed by carol singing accompanied by pianist Carol Smucker.

Good Shepherd invites you to enter into the holy space of Christmas through a variety of services, beginning with a Blue Christmas Service on Friday December 21st. That darkest day of the year acknowledges that Christmas is not always joyful for everyone. The service starts at 11a.m. on the 21st in a quiet liturgy that recognizes that in this season we may weep for what has been and for what might have been.  Gather with others to hear God’s message of hope and to be fed by the Lord’s supper.  Following the service is a simple lunch to which all are welcome.

Continue the celebration of Christmas through any of three worship services. On Christmas Eve, join us for the 4 p.m. Christmas Eve family-friendly service of Holy Eucharist or come at 10 p.m. for the beautiful midnight Eucharist with candles, music and choir. On Christmas morning, celebrate Jesus’ birth with a simple Holy Eucharist at 10 a.m.

All are welcome. Good Shepherd is located at 495 Herbert Hills Drive just off Route 64 east of Hayesville, NC. For more information visit www.goodshepherdhayesville.org or call 828-389-3397.

A Smokin' Good Time

A Smokin' Good Time

Come Punkin' Chunkin' time in Clay County (Oct 19-20), a favorite food booth is also a major fund-raiser for Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Hayesville. Holy Smokers is a non-profit ministry that raises funds exclusively for the church's Outreach ministry. Their mission statement is "Feeding God's people one Butt at a time."

Making use of Wally Figura's talent with meat, the ministry has operated since 2016 to supplement Good Shepherd's outreach budget (most of which goes back into the community) and to enjoy fun and good food with our friends and neighbors. Equipped with a commercial rotisserie smoker, the group can be found at such local events as Butts N Spuds, Punkin Chuckin, fish fries, charity golf tournaments, as well as offering occasional "Smokeouts" selling pre-ordered smoked butts, ribs ,brisket, corned beef, and lemon pepper chicken. Holy Smokers have won the 1st place Judges Award in "Butts and Spuds" competition and the People's Choice award for the "Punkin Chunkin' Chili Cook-off."
